FPL proposed coal burning plant in Glades County
FPL has applied for a rate increase to recover the money they spent trying to get a coal plant approved in Glades County. Will let you know when a hearing is scheduled.
--------------------------------- The Public Service Commission denied the application from FPL for a coal burning plant in Glades County. Our Dr. Bobbie Conti provided detailed expertise to the residents of Glades to assist them in defeating this project just as was done in St. Lucie County.
---------------------------------- June 3, 2007 The Public Service Commission will vote on Tuesday, June 5.
----------------------------------- Hearing pending before the Governor. ---------------------------------- Public Hearing at the State capital on Monday April 16.
----------------------------------- Opposition to the proposed Glades County Coal Fired Plant is growing. Two petitions have been filed objecting. This issue really came home to the residents of Reserve/PGA Village two weeks ago when there was a major fire in Glades County. We received tremendous smoke pollution even though there was almost no wind, and cars and decks were coated with a layer of ash. We can smell the smoke and see the ash, but how will we know how much Mercury is coming our way, in the air. This is a major health concern for the residents of our county. Please stand up and be counted. Call/email/write
Governor Crist charlie.crist@myflorida.com Senator Ken Pruitt pruitt.ken.web@flsenate.gov ----------------------------
At the Tuesday, February 20 meeting, FPL officials indicated that 3 trains a day would be passing our community, carrying coal. Please contact our commissioners (St. Lucie County) about any concerns you may have regarding this situation.
-------------------------------
Dr. Bobbie Conti and her committee have been asked to assist the residents of Glades County in their fight against a Coal burning plant in their community. Bobbie and Bob Simons have been attending the Glades meetings and offering advice and assistance. Thanks a bunch for your community dedication Bob and Bobbie. -------------------------------------------- November 6, 2006 Dr. Bobbie Conti (member of the PORI Board of Directors) has been asked to present to individual groups in Glades County regarding the health hazards associated with coal fired electrical plants.
----------------------------------------- September 17, 2006 We are investigating the route FPL plans to use to take coal into the proposed plant in Glades County.
----------------------------------------- July 22, 2006 Elected officials from Okeechobee indicate that FPL will not propose a coal plant in their county.
June 12, 2006 There are indications that FPL has approached land owners in Okeechobee County. Nothing formal to report.
Our Watchdogs have reported that FPL is having meetings with Okeechobee Commissions. Will keep you alerted.
------------------------------------------------ Dr. Bobbie Conti, a member of the PORI Board, was honored Saturday, March 25 by the St. Lucie County Conservation Alliance Commission. Bobbie was named the Enivronmentalist of the Year in St. Lucie County. We are very proud of her.
--------------------------------------------------- All Watchdogs are on guard.

The FPL Oversight Committee of the Property Owners of the Reserve, Inc., after diligent research, dialogue, and community disclosure, makes the following recommendation to the Board:
Due to findings that the proposed FPL Coal-fired plant is for (a) exporting electricity to areas way beyond the borders of
St. Lucie County, (b) that there will be pollution to our air
quality, water supply, ecosystems, and a host of other
possible unknowns affecting the health of the population
© declining property values relative to knowledge and
perceptions historic to coal-fired plants, (d) location and
increased use of a secondary railway for coal, limestone,
ammonia, and by-product transportation increasing the
exposure to spark generated fires, housing vibrations, and noise during
designated human quiet hours, (e) waste disposal and storage issues
that have the potential of harm to vegetation, water aquifers and
residents of the County, (f) and failure to respond, to our satisfaction
todate, to questions related to “corporate social responsibility” to the
residents of St. Lucie County.
We hereby declare a “no” vote of support for the construction of this
coal-fired plant within the boundaries of St. Lucie County.
This “motion” was passed by the Board of the ‘Property Owners of the Reserve, Inc. on August 17, 2005. ----------------------------------------------------------- August 8, 2005 Dr. Bobbie Conti, PORI board member and her committee organized an informational meeting with FPL July 13 at the Wanamaker Room. There was standing room only. Many questions were asked and answered. FPL indicated that they have submitted plans to the county, but the issue has not been placed on the August Planning and Zoning Board agenda. We will post the information about the hearing as soon as it is scheduled. -------------------------------------------- June 20, 2005 Informational meeting with FPL at the Wanamaker Room on Wednesday, July 13, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. All residents are invited. Bring questions.
------------------------------------- June 1, 2005 Watch channel 20 for a complete presentation by FPL with numerous questions from the audience. -------------------------------------- May 11, 2005 LOOKING FOR COMMUNITY EXPERTISE A. Someone who has expertise in the technical functioning, etc. for an energy power plant. B. Someone who has worked for a power plant. C. Someone with expertise in rail lines, transportation of goods, coal. If you can help with any of this information please contact Dr. Bobbie Conti, PORI Chairperson, Committee on Proposed FPL Coal Energy Plant at misqueetoo@aol.com or 772-465-3931. ----------------------------------------------------------- May 2, 2005 FPL has submitted a zoning change request to St. Lucie County. The Planning and Zoning board will hear the request in the future at a public hearing. We will post the date when it is available.
---------------------------------------------------------- PORI COMMITTEE REPORT BY BEN KIRMAN The meeting last night with the FPL representatives on the new coal-fired plant was interesting to say the least. There are many unknowns and unanswered questions, but one thing is painfully clear, the Florida East Coast K-Line behind our homes, is the primary direct line to the 7000 acre property that FPL has optioned in SW St. Lucie County. They plan to build the plant on the southern end of the property right where the K-line crosses canal C-23 as it turns from north-south to east-west. Our line literally touches the site of the plant, while the CSX line which has been mentioned as another rail line is miles to the south and west. They, FPL are talking about at least one train a day, every day of 100+ cars bringing coal into the plant and a second train every other day of 40 cars of limestone which is also consumed in the plant. This would be in addition to the trains that already use the line to move sugar products up from the sugar processing plants south of the lake. There is also a major unresolved issue of the waste products, including heavy metals and ash that will be produced by the plant, and whether FPL can store it all on the site or will they have to at some time move it out, which would likely be by rail. So there is at least the possibility that we could have trains of waste material also in our backyard
